As a parent, there are certain moments in life that stand out as significant milestones in your child’s journey to adulthood. Today, I find myself in one of those moments as my son embarks on his very first military assignment in the Air Force. It’s a mix of pride, anxiety, and a hint of nostalgia as I reflect on how quickly he has grown into the brave and capable young man he is today.
From the earliest days of his life, Chris has shown a strong sense of duty and responsibility. He’s a military brat through and through. Born on a Marine Corps base and bouncing around duty stations his entire life; his decision to join the military didn’t come as a surprise, but it still filled me with a myriad of emotions. As a family, we have always stood behind his choices, knowing that this was his calling and his passion.
The past few months have been a whirlwind of preparation and in typical Air Force tradition; he found out that he was headed off to his first duty station with only three weeks’ notice.
As I watch him pack his bags and prepare to leave for his first assignment, I can’t help but think about the sacrifices that come with this path he’s chosen. The uncertainty of military life, the distance that will separate us, and the inherent risks involved are not easy to bear as a parent. It brings back memories of when I joined the military. 22 years have flown by and it’s hard to believe that he will soon be leading men and women in the military.
As I give him a tight hug and remind him to stay safe, I can’t help but think about the legacy he’s creating. He’s not just following in the footsteps of his forebears who served their country; he’s also forging his own path, one that will leave an indelible mark on our family’s history.
I know that this assignment is just the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a remarkable career. While the road ahead may be challenging, filled with both triumphs and tribulations, I have no doubt that my son will face it all with the same determination and courage that brought him to this point.
To all the parents out there whose children have chosen the path of service, remember that you’re not alone in your feelings of pride, anxiety, and love. Together, we’ll support our children as they embrace their calling and make a difference in the world. My son’s first military assignment is a testament to his dedication, and I couldn’t be prouder of the person he has become.
